Don’t stop your bad habits.

barnReally, seriously, don’t stop your bad habits.

I’m not suggesting that we don’t all have habits we’d be better off leaving in the dust, I’m just pointing out that stopping bad habits doesn’t work. It’s a bit like pulling weeds out by their leaves. Maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll be weedless for a week or two, but eventually those feisty little weed roots will regenerate and flourish and voila—new weeds, looking very much like the old weeds we pulled up.

And to boot, chances are really good that those new weeds are stronger post pulling than they ever were before we started the weed pulling in the first place. And so it is with our bad habits.

So…. what’s a girl to do with a bad habit, you may ask.

Never mind the bad habit, I would answer.

Figure out what you’d rather be doing if the bad habit wasn’t in place. If the bad habit was gone, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t _____ then I would be _____. The key to getting rid of bad habits is habit shifting. Focus on the 2nd part of this sentence. “I would be …..” All of your attention on the “would be …..”

We’ll talk more about how you make a good habit stick next time.

Just a thought.
